My philosophy on teaching math...
I believe all students need a strong mathematics vocabulary. Students can form understandings and can make connections to their previous knowledge using a mathematics vocabulary.
I believe math is best learned in a cooperative learning environment (e.g. Math Workshop). Cooperative learning allows students to teach each other through sharing and explaining their ideas.
I believe math instruction should be applied through real-world experiences. The use of multi-media material should be used to supplement instruction (e.g. videos, songs)
I believe math should be fun and exciting! Allowing students to explore math through games and manipulatives opens their minds to endless possibilities of problem solving in math.
I believe in small group instruction during math workshop to teach to the specific learning styles of students (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). Small group instruction allows for quick observation and formative assessments.
